High-quality images without radiation – only magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can do that. The strong magnetic field of the tomograph causes the hydrogen atoms in the human body (which consists largely of water) to rotate in the same direction, and a radio signal causes them to oscillate. The resulting response signals provide finely graded slice images. As a procedure without exposure to radiation, MRI can also be used on pregnant women and children.

MRI of the knee is a painless and non-invasive scan that can be used to evaluate a variety of knee conditions and injuries, including torn ligaments and tendons, meniscus injuries, muscle strains and fractures, and degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis.

MRI of the knee can also be used to monitor the progression of these diseases and injuries over time.


You will need: Assignment (detailed brief), previous images/findings, completed questionnaires.

All metallic objects (including jewelry) must be taken off (magnet). You will be examined in a tube with a diameter of approx. 70cm, the examination couch will be moved slightly again and again, please lie very still and follow the instructions of the staff. During the examination, loud knocking noises can be heard, which is why you will be given headphones. An emergency balloon and constant visual contact will allow you to make yourself heard at any time if needed. The examination lasts between 10-60 minutes.

No contrast agent is administered.
