Lungs

The lungs are used to take in oxygen from the surrounding air and excrete carbon dioxide from the bloodstream. Due to familial accumulation, environmental pollution (nitrogen oxides) and nicotine abuse (smoking) the lungs are chronically damaged and it leads to the common disease emphysema (COPD). These changes can be visualized in computed tomography without contrast medium. Lung cancer (adenocarcinoma of the lung, squamous cell carcinoma of the lung) is one of the most common causes of death, and is detected by computed tomography and is submitted to further diagnostics.
